ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. According to research ALS has no cure.
The Ice Bucket Challenge is a fun way to raise money and create awareness about this disease affecting the lives of thousands through social media outlets .When someone challenges you, you have 24 hours to complete the challenge and donate to the ALS Association on their website.
CCRE loves being a part of the Ice Bucket Challenge because we love to support philanthropy and organizations within our community who are trying to change the world just like we are. Our mission is to make the world a better place and the Ice Bucket Challenge is just one simple way of doing so.
